Location. The Selborne Hotel, Spa and Golf Estate is located in Kwa Zulu Natal, South Africa, 60 kilometres from the Oribi Gorge.
Hotel Features. A stately manor house set amid lush, sub tropical gardens that run down to a private sandy beach, the Selborne has a relaxed and tranquil atmosphere, blending old world charm with modern luxury. The health spa offers an array of treatments, from chocolate mousse body wraps to Kahuna and hot stone massages. There is a fitness room, hot tub and steam room. The beach club has a large freshwater pool and separate kids' pool. The hotel has a large 18 hole golf course on site and the forest surrounding the hotel is home to over 160 species of bird.
The hotel has its own restaurant specialising in local fish dishes. Guests can eat on the terrace on warm evenings. Complimentary buffet breakfast is served in the hotel each morning.
The Selborne's private beach club overlooks the warm Indian Ocean. There are private changing facilities and scuba diving, snorkelling, boating and horse riding activities. The golf course includes a clubhouse with bar and lounge, a Pro shop selling golfing accessories and an indoor golf academy. Caddies, trolleys and lessons are all available for a surcharge.
Guestrooms. Air conditioned guestrooms feature bathrooms with separate bath and shower. Amenities include satellite television, direct dial telephones, minibars, bathrobes and slippers. There is complimentary bottled water and an evening turndown service. Garden suites are set in the surrounding forest. Decor is old English style, with beams and colourful, soft furnishings. Floors are wooden or tiled.
Expert Tip. Every June, the sardine run can be witnessed in the nearby Indian Ocean. This event sees millions of the tiny fish swimming northwards in a silvery stream. In their attempts to escape greedy predators, they often beach in shoals, leading a sardine free for all for the locals.
